ALLEGHANY, SIERRA COUNTY — November 7, 2026. Sierra County supervisors voted 4–0 on November 3 to suspend the special-use permit for the Original Sixteen to One gold mine after the operator failed to complete its application to update mining and land-reclamation plans.

What the decision does

Quartzview Corporation, the operator, had received extensions to explain how it intends to extract, process and transport ore and later restore affected land. County planning staff said its latest submission remained incomplete. The suspension halts mining activity while leaving open a future board vote to permit operations to resume if the application is complete. This is not permanent permit revocation.

Jobs and environmental concerns

The operator has argued that the mine supports five jobs and may create additional employment. County planners raised concerns about hauling ore to a processing site in Riverside County without adequate permit descriptions. The mine also faces obligations concerning water discharge into Kanaka Creek, with state regulators considering future deadlines for pollution controls.

What may continue?

Planning Director Brandon Pangman said certain maintenance and water-pumping work may continue under applicable permits, but excavation, prospecting, ore processing and hauling would be prohibited during suspension. A separate Planning Commission appeal concerning ore transport was scheduled for November 12.
