ALLEGHANY, Sierra County — October 25, 2026. Travelers heading toward Alleghany and other remote western Sierra County communities should be careful about relying on ordinary navigation apps during winter. The Sierra County Public Works snow-removal page warns that some county roads do not receive snow removal and can become generally impassable in winter.

The county’s GPS warning

Sierra County explicitly cautions travelers that GPS and internet maps are not reliable guides to seasonal rural-road conditions. A route shown on a phone may lead onto an unmaintained road or one that is closed. The county provides an official list of county roads without winter snow removal, and its winter-safety page links additional seasonal guidance.

This is a standing preparedness warning, not a claim that a particular Alleghany road is closed today. Residents and visitors should check the route immediately before traveling rather than assume that a normal summer drive remains passable in late autumn or winter.

Who maintains the road?

County roads, state highways and private access routes may have different maintenance arrangements. Sierra County directs travelers to Public Works for county-road snow-removal information and to Caltrans for state-highway conditions. Caltrans’ public road-information service is available through QuickMap.

For questions about county-road responsibility, Sierra County Public Works lists (530) 289-3201, with its office in Downieville. Road ownership should be verified for a particular address, especially when planning contractor access, deliveries or emergency routes.

Winter planning matters for Alleghany

Local emergency preparation also involves fire and weather risks beyond snow. The county’s hazard-planning page identifies the Alleghany/Pike City Volunteer Fire Department among local organizations considered in its Community Wildfire Protection Plan update. Wildfire planning and winter access are separate issues, but both make route awareness and official alerts important in a small mountain community.

Three checks before a rural drive

  • Read Sierra County’s list of roads that do not receive snow removal.
  • Check Caltrans QuickMap for any state highways on the route, and confirm county roads separately.
  • Keep an alternative route and postpone the trip when conditions or access cannot be verified. Never drive around a closure.
